Safety and Security Expectations 2025 - 2026
Dear North Side Family,
Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year. I am looking forward to an exciting year of teaching and learning with all our students and families. As we begin the new year, there are several new security initiatives to bring to your attention. Please know that I expect everyone’s cooperation, adherence and patience as we implement these new procedures to ensure the safety of all our students and staff. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call the school at 754-322-7450.
SUPERVISION: Student hours are 8:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. Per district policy, student supervision is only provided 30 minutes before and after school. Gates and doors will remain locked until breakfast begins at 7:15 a.m. The first bell rings at 7:50 a.m. for students to prepare for class, and instruction will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. Students arriving after 8:00 a.m. are considered tardy and their attendance will be marked as such. Parents will not be allowed in the school during arrival or dismissal and must report to the office with questions or concerns.
LATE ARRIVAL AND EARLY DISMISSAL: Students arriving to school after 8:00 a.m., must be escorted into the school and signed in by a parent. Parents picking up students for early dismissal must do so BEFORE 1:30 p.m. (11:30 a.m. on EARLY RELEASE DAYS).
INDEPENDENCE DAY: During the first week of school (8/11 and 8/12), parents will be allowed to walk their child to class. Students arriving to campus after 8:10 a.m. will be escorted to class by an NSE staff member. Independence Day is Wednesday, August 13th, all students will report to the cafeteria.
CAMPUS VISITS: Visitors must report to the front office and present photo identification when entering the campus. NO access will be permitted, nor will students or information be released, without identification. ALL visitors must always wear school- issued visitors badges on the upper body in a visible location while on campus.
VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers for classrooms, school events or field trips MUST BE CLEARED in the electronic volunteer system (STAR) prior to coming to school. All parents are encouraged to complete the application to volunteer NOW at https://www.browardschools.com/community/volunteer/volunteer-application to be cleared for events well in advance of volunteer opportunities. The clearance process can take up to three weeks, so applying early is important. Volunteers need to reapply for this clearance every year. Anyone not cleared by the district system will NOT be allowed access to events or classrooms.
GATES: Perimeter gates will remain locked during the school day.
COMMUNICATION: Any changes in student information or dismissal MUST be communicated in WRITING to the teacher. Changes will not be accepted over the phone or from unauthorized people.
TRAFFIC: Vehicular traffic MUST obey state and local regulations. Violations are subject to ticketing by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. Violations include:
- Cell phone use in school zones
- Excessive speed
- Disregarding traffic signs
- Unauthorized parking on roadways, swales, and yards
- Endangering pedestrians and bicyclists
DRILLS: Per state statue, schools will continue to have 1 fire drill per month. Additionally, schools will now implement 1 lockdown drill per quarter. Students will be taught the proper procedures for all drills at the start of the year and be reminded monthly of expected behaviors.
BADGES: Students will be issued student identification badges by the school to wear during school. Should you ever find one outside school property, please return it to our office immediately.
UNIFORMS: Students are expected to adhere to the district’s Code of Conduct dress code, and specifically, to our school’s uniform requirements. Refer to the school’s website for details of the school uniform expectation.
Your Proud Principal,
Marilyn Guirand
